Why heartfelt motherhood and family photography is an investment worthwhile

I know as mothers it can be hard to justify spending money on ourselves… but motherhood and family photography is an investment that is so worthwhile and will only get richer over time. Just when I think my job as a Hertfordshire Maternity Newborn and Family Photographer couldn’t get any sweeter, I have an unforgettable session like this one. I don’t think I could put into words just how special this motherhood photography session in the Lake District was… but I’ll give it a go. Jen shared beforehand that she wouldn’t normally dream of spending money on photos, but as time moved forward and her son began to change with every passing month, she realised she had to encapsulate it all. Her as a mother, and Jasper as the cheeky 14mth old.

You are investing in your motherhood memories & their childhood memories

The saying is sort of true… blink and you’ll miss it / they grow up so fast / before you know it you’ll be waving them off to school. And it’s true. Time really does move so quickly when you become a mother. Your teeny tiny newborn is all of a sudden making their first steps out into the world and all of a sudden you’ll find it incredibly hard to remember all those little newborn details you swore you’d never forget. Our mind plays tricks on us, we think that there’s no possible way we could forget… but with time the memories fade replacing new ones. Don’t let those memories become lost, mark them in time, celebrate you & celebrate them just as you are right now. There is no such things as a perfect time to have family portraits, there is simply right now.

This is Jen & her son Jasper. Jen is the talented soul who designs & makes the gorgeous maternity gowns in my client wardrobe. We first connected on Instagram, I adored her creations & she loved my work… we would chat often about mothering, business, the endless juggling that goes hand in hand. Jen lives in the Lake District, we have never been, so of course we had to visit so I could finally meet this dear friend I had made. Jen told me about a place dear to her heart, she used to visit there often with her late grandparents when she was a young girl & wanted to take her son there. It was a peak in the beautiful Lake District, overlooking the rolling hills & magical sunset, at the top of the peak were small rocks where her grandparents ashes are scattered; a place where their souls can rest as they watch the sun setting. At the bottom of the peak was a small lake, we spent some time there dipping our toes in before climbing up to the top, just in time for the golden sunset. Jasper was cosy in his backpack carrier, taking it all in his stride; something he’s so used to as they enjoy hiking the peaks as a family most weekends. When we got to the top, Jen threw on one of her beautiful creations, pulled Jasper in close & told him stories of his great-grandparents as they sat on their resting place. It was a very emotional evening, one I’ll cherish forever. Becoming a mother is life’s most transformational journey, with each new milestone we are evolving and growing. Sometimes I look back at photos from years before and find it hard to recognise the woman I'm looking at in the photographs… but I know that I’m incredibly proud of her. Motherhood is hard, full of ups & downs, a real rollercoaster of love & despair all rolled into one. As mothers we are the ones quietly carrying everything, giving so much to everyone, we deserve to give a little something back to ourselves too. I love that I get to celebrate mothers every day, relish & applaud in their achievements, shed tears of sorrow & despair, sharing stories of the wild ride of motherhood.
